Life exists throughout nature. Every living thing, from massive trees to microscopic insects, contributes to the incredible biodiversity of our planet. This article explores the diversity of living things in our surroundings and how they manage to live in their particular settings.
Diversity in Plants
The size, form, and structure of plants vary widely. They are categorised according to their growth and look as follows:
Trees are tall, woody plants with substantial trunks. Higher above the ground, branches develop.
Ex: Mango tree, Banyan Tree, Neem Tree etc...
Shrubs are medium-sized plants that branch close to the ground and have firm, woody stems.
Ex: Rose plant, Tulsi, Jasmine plant, Henna etc...
Herbs are little plants with tender, verdant stems.
Ex: Tomato plant, Basil, Mint, Parsley etc...
Climbers are plants that require assistance to climb higher because their stems are weak.
Ex: Grapevine, Bitter Gourd etc...
Plants that stretch out over the ground are called creepers.
Ex: Watermelon plant, Pumpkin, Musk melon
Leaves and Roots of Plants
Venation refers to the pattern of the thin lines on a leaf, which are called veins. Reticulate veins are net-like veins, such as those found in hibiscus. Parallel venation are veins (such as those in grass and bananas) that runs parallel.
Reticulate venation plants often have a taproot system, which consists of one main root and smaller lateral roots.
Ex: Hibiscus and Mustard
A fibrous root system is a collection of roots of comparable sizes and typically seen in plants with parallel venation.
Ex: Grass, Banana leaf
Dicots vs. Monocots
Plants can also be categorised using seeds:
Monocots: Seeds with a single cotyledon, like maize, have fibrous roots and parallel veining.
Dicots: Taproots and reticulate venation are characteristics of seeds having two cotyledons, such as chickpeas.
Diversity in Animals
Animals are categorised according on their characteristics and environments. Fish can move across the water thanks to their fins and streamlined bodies. In grassy or hilly terrain, goats move with their legs.
In order to survive, animals adjust to their environment. They can cope with climate, topography, and the availability of food and water thanks to their adaptations.

Plants in Harsh Environments
Cacti: To live in hot deserts, they store water in their thick stems.
Deodar trees: In cold climates, their conical form and sloping branches make it easy for snow to slip off.
Rhododendrons:
Shorter and with smaller leaves in the Nilgiris (to handle wind), but taller in Sikkim (because of the climate).

A plant or animal's natural home is called its habitat.
Preservation of Biodiversity
The loss of their habitat has put several species in India in danger. To keep them safe:
Our earth is alive and thriving because of the amazing diversity of plants and creatures that surround us. We can better appreciate nature and be reminded of our responsibility to preserve it when we comprehend how living things adapt and survive.
